Help.!I understand from reading various threads here that VR can be activated using Navcoder. So I bought Navcoder, a Resler interface and some BMW parts so I could hook up neatly to the CD autochanger connector and do so.Connection is fine, and Navcoder seems to run as it should and I get lots of messages on the laptop's screen and can scan my modules etc. When I put a tick in the VR enabled box on the code telephone screen and pick the code SES button, all seems correct with me getting a message saying it has been recoded, verified etc. Easy I thought.!I then switched everything off and back on so the new settings could take effect and when I press the man speaking button the steering wheel for a few seconds, I get nothing. I expect a beep so I can give the car an instruction.Separately (or is it?) when I read the BT module, I get: 'Error when reading Bluetooth data: No response from device (time out) Check i-Bus connections and check that the device is switched on.'
Also, I also am unable to save scan results and get 'run-time error '52' - bad file name or number' when I try to - is this related to my other issues - is Navcoder not running correctly? My car is an early UK 2006 E46 coupe. According to Navcoder, my phone module is part number 6 963 758 hw 50 sw 28 made in May 05 (which elsewhere I read is an option 633 bluetooth with telematics unit) but I would expect to have a 6th generation unit (part number 84 21 6 955 522) - or am I misunderstanding things?I am using Navcoder version 2.5.20 which I believe is the latest.Any help, advice etc welcomed! Hi BigCol, this may sound like a daft question, but do you have a Voice Recognition unit fitted?NavCoder (you do have the latest version) will indeed allow you to activate VR, but only if your car has the SES module fitted.

As far as I'm aware NavCoder will not throw up an error message if you don't have the SES module fitted, so when you get a message saying it's been recoded this may lead you to believe you have SES when in fact you don't.The best thing is to post your question in the latest, and Jochen will surely give you an answer. If you input your VIN into the you will be able to pull up a diagram of the SES unit to see what it looks like. From the results of the Navcoder scan, I reckon I have option SA633 - Bluetooth/Telematics as opposed to standard Bluetooth which is option SA644. Voice Recognition is SA620.Have been looking at the RealOEM.com link you mentioned Jaycee (as has Jochen!).The description of my part number says:A TCU (TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT) CAN ONLY BE ORDERED WITH SPECIFICATION OF THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.
WHEN SHIPPING THE EXCHANGE TCU, THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER IS CODED.RECODING IS NOT POSSIBLE. THE TCU ONLY FUNCTIONS PROPERLY WITH SUITABLE CODING. THEREFORE, EXCHANGE TCUS CANNOT BE ORDERED FOR STOCK! RETROFITTING AND CONVERSIONS TO SA633 ARE NOT POSSIBLE!My interpretation of this is that a 633 unit cannot be recoded to include VR (by Navcoder or any other way) unlike a 644.As such, I guess it's time to start searching eBay etc for a 644 ULF to get VR. (anyone got one spare?)That said, can the units simply be swapped does anyone know? Thanks for the advice guys.As suspected (and confirmed here) I have a 633 Telematics Control Unit (TCU) rather than a 644 ULF (as an aside, what does ULF stand for?)I already have Bluetooth functionality but I want voice recognition too!Having spoken to my friendly BMW garage I am told I can get the necessary bits to add VR to my set-up for £146.46 inc VAT (can't/won't give me part numbers and/or advice re fitting times and whether any coding is necessary).
This would be a special order from Germany 1 week - 10 days leadtime.I was also told that a 84.10.9.154.358 latest generation ULF would be £268.21 inc VAT. Available next-day.Having just missed out on a 12th generation ULF on eBay this week which went for £205, a new one looks good value. My gut feeling is to go for the ULF as it'll be the latest version and so offer best performance and be more likely to upload by iPhone 3G's phone book etc - but equally I fancy achieving what I want and saving £100+!So. What do you chaps think?Should I add VR to the TCU I've got or replace it with a ULF? (and in each case, would the process be straight forward and 'plug and play')? What do you chaps think?Should I add VR to the TCU I've got or replace it with a ULF? (and in each case, would the process be straight forward and 'plug and play')?Prices seem a bit cheap from a stealer to be honest. When I queried on my E46 about upgrading my BT ULF, I was quoted over £400 + VAT; luckily it failed under warranty and I got a newer gen one.As for VR, when I bought the E83, I was dismayed to find no VR even though it had BT. I got a quote from the dealer who claimed that to retrofit VR required a part (SES Module, which is clearly wrong as there isn't the connector for it), and they wanted £595 + VAT PLUS the fitting and coding cost When I pointed out that there was no facility to fit a seperate SES module and all that was needed was coding, they just weren't interested in progressing it further.Navcoder was a godsend, despite the dealer uncoding VR now 3 times after the car was in for work!Anyhow, I suggest getting a firm QUOTATION from the dealer as they may try it on when you get the bill. And the prize for anticipating a cock-up on Mr BMW's behalf goes to. Trapdoor!Just rung the dealer to order the new ULF.
'oh, can you just confirm the price on that please?' 'one moment' (sounds of keyboard tapping) '£412.62' 'you what? You said £268.21 on Friday'.Abbreviation of what became a long conversation, he will sell it to me at that price, which in turn is cost price! So, all-in-all, have got a fantastic deal - but not one that is likely to be repeated!
Should have ordered half-a-dozen at that price in retrospect!
